“Gap in Space / Gat in de Ruimte” public film / outdoor installation, 2021

60 minutes + 15 minutes black on a loop, projected onto a buutermilk-covered window.

The performance-project “Gap in Space” that I did with Bram van Helden was so influenced by the restricions of Covid-19 that I felt it was reflecting the times we experienced at that moment; a moment of quietness, reflection and emptiness in which it was hard to reach out to other people. I created a film during the performance. In fact, the making of the film was part of the performance; the camera(man) was one of the performers, the (almost absent) audiencemembers were our actors and so are you, the spectator of the film.

Later on I organized an exhibition in a derelict home with my buddies from ZuiderLink collective and decided to project the movie onto the window that looked out on a public square so that it could be seen at night by by-passers. The window is the gap through which we could reach out to our audience, so to say. Ironically, during the exhibition we were once again in lockdown due to a new corona-outbreak. So it seemed all appropriate to show the work this way again.
